Data management plan

Efficient research data management depends on good planning. The development of a data management plan (DMP) creates clear structures in the research process, helps to identify any problems and guarantees the scientifically responsible handling of research data.

A DMP is a written document that describes the handling of data in a research project across all phases of the life cycle.

The DMP is preferably established at the start of the project and adapted as the research project progresses.

DMP sections

A DMP contains four main areas that can be established on the basis of key questions.

Data collection and documentation
  • What data are collected, monitored, generated or reused and how?
  • How are the data organized and documented?
Ethical, legal and safety-related issues
  • How are ethical and copyright issues handled and dealt with?
  • How are access to data and data security managed?
Data storage and data retention
  • How will your data be stored and backed up during the research project?
  • What are your plans for data preservation?
Data sharing and accessibility (publication)
  • How and where are the data made accessible?
  • Are certain restrictions necessary to protect sensitive data?
