File formats should be chosen according to easy processibility, reproducibility and reuse. If it is not possible to tend to these requirements during the research project it will have to be necessary to convert the files into a format that allows for the long term preservation of the data.
Research data and their analysis form an integral part of research. In order to prevent data loss and manipulation it is recommended to evaluate adquate storage solutions at the beginning of the research project. How and where data are stored (e.g. notebook, external hd, usb flash drive, cloud) is dependent on the specific research data (file size, data volume, joint data management). Frequent backup of research data on additional devices is highly recommended.
