The readability of file formats such as Word in a long-term perspective is not guaranteed. Therefore, files often have to be converted into formats that are more suitable for long-term preservation. Copy-protected files or such with Digital Rights Management (DRM) are not recommended. Proprietary formats (i.e. formats by commercial providers) are also not desirable.
Subsequently you will find some recommendations regarding file formats that are suitable for long-term preservation. These recommendations are based on recommendations provided by the Library of Congress, the Schweizer Koordinationsstelle für die dauerhafte Archivierung elektronischer Unterlagen (KOST) and the Library of the ETH Zurich as well as on the current state of technological development and market observations.
